Retina gets detached from its place due to either a hole or a tear formation.
Retina detachment (RD) is a detachment of retina from its normal wallpaper like attachments throughout.
RD usually starts from peripheral retinal break (tear or hole). Peripheral retinal breaks form more commonly in those with myopia (those wearing minus power glasses), eye injuries (blunt or perforating), intraocular surgery (e.g. Cataract extraction especially in a camp type surgery), family history of retinal breaks or detachment. These patients are at greater risk of developing RD and they should have regular peripheral retina examination. If any of the retinal break is found on examination, it should be sealed to prevent development of RD.
It can be sealed either by laser surgery or prophylactic cryopexy. Retina is reattached by surgery with much better results than used to be before. There are no means by which we can structurally strengthen our retina.
